I am your neighbor, Julie Willis, and as a candidate for Village of Homewood Trustee, I would like to take a moment to introduce myself to all of you and explain why I hope to continue serving you as Village Trustee
I have lived in Homewood with my husband and 3 children for 14 years. It is my home and I love it. It is a wonderful place to raise a family and I am so happy that my children have had the opportunity to grow up here.
All three of them have attended Homewood-Flossmoor High School. My youngest son is a current sophomore. My older daughter and son graduated from HF and went on to earn college degrees; my daughter, a Studio Art degree from Trinity Christian College, and my son, a degree in Civil Engineering from UW- Madison. I was initially drawn to Homewood by what their schools could offer a special needs child. I am so grateful that the schools and the community at large have served my family well.
I grew up on the south side of Chicago in the Morgan Park and West Pullman neighborhoods. I attended Kenwood Academy High School and earned my Bachelor’s, Master’s and Law degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. It was at U of I that I met my husband, Arthur. We will celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary in June.
I have dedicated over 27 years to defending the rights of the indigent through my career as an attorney with the Cook County Public Defender’s Office. I am currently an Attorney Supervisor with that office. It has been a challenging profession- one that I am passionate about, and one that often puts my faith to the test.
I am a person of faith. I am a member and current Congregation President at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Country Club Hills. Prior to my election as President, I served as Congregation Secretary, and as President and Treasurer of the school’s Parent-Teacher League.
My faith has shaped my values and attitude. The Golden Rule is my guiding principle. It drives my behavior more than anything else. My chosen profession can make putting that creed into practice a challenge - I am often dealing with people at their worst, people who think and behave very differently from me, and those who oppose me at every turn. But adhering to the Golden Rule in the face of those obstacles is what makes it meaningful.
My entire adulthood has been dedicated to serving my neighbors and protecting the rights of individuals. I’ve served my neighbors through my work with the Public Defender’s Office. I’ve served my neighbors through my various roles in the church. And now, I am privileged to serve as a Trustee for the Village of Homewood. I believe my career and service history has helped me develop the qualities needed to be the Trustee you deserve - one who will protect your rights and interests. I am thoughtful and reflective; fair-minded, reasonable and smart. I will do everything I can to serve this community well. It has been a wonderful place for my children. I want it to be a wonderful place for their children as well.
It would be an honor to continue serving you as a Village Trustee. I hope you will continue to have me, and I ask for your support.
